About Mortgage Rates and Home Loan Refinance in Buffalo
Buffalo, located in Western New York and on the Eastern shores of Lake Erie also serves as the county seat of Erie County. The city and metro area is the 2nd largest in the state of New York behind New York City of course. Buffalo is home to around 260,000 which is down significantly from it’s peak of 580,000 residents in 1950 when it was one of the largest cities in the US. Buffalo’s origin dates back to 1789 when it was known as New Amsterdam until 1800 when residents voted to re-name the city Buffalo. The city quickly grew with the advent of the Erie Canal. Back then, the area was booming with Great Lakes shipping, manufacturing, steel production and as a major railroad hub. Since the 1950’s the economic climate in the are has changed into more of a service economy. Many manufacturing operations have moved to foreign countries and Great Lakes shipping activity has waned.
The current economy of Buffalo is like many other cities in the region with strong financial, service and retail sectors. Due to its location near the Canadian border, many from nearby Ontario regularly shop in Buffalo because of lower prices.
The area is also well-known for its ethnic foods. With residents from all over the world, visitors and locals enjoy a variety of cuisines. Famous for Buffalo Wings which were invented at the city’s Anchor Bar, Beef on Weck (roast beef or steak on a kimmelweck bun), pierogies and kielbasa. Many food production companies such as Weber’s Mustard and Rich Products call the area home while General Mills makes Cheerios and Wheaties and Gold Medal Brand flour. Visitors and residents can sample all the ethnic fare at the Italian, Hellenic, Lebanese and National Buffalo Wing Festivals.
in 2010, Forbes rated Buffalo as the 10th best place to raise a family in the US and the city has been given the “All America City” by the National Civic League on more than one occasion.
