Founded back in 1636, Providence is one of the first cities in the United States. The capital of Rhode Island is located on the Providence River at the head of the Narragansett Bay and is a relatively small but densly populated city. About 178,000 people call Providence home, but like many cities on the East coast, they live in relatively close quarters with 9,000 residents per square mile.
