New York City, located in Southeastern New York on the Atlantic Ocean, East River and Hudson River is the most populated city in the United States with 8,175,133 residents. The City consists of the 5 boroughs of Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. The boroughs were merged in 1898 to form what is now NYC. The New York Metro area is also the largest in the United States and one of the largest in the world with 18.9 million total people residing in the area. New York City also has the most dense population of any city in the US with an average of 27,532 people per square mile.
Originally settled by the Dutch in 1624, the city was then known as New Amsterdam until 1664 when the English took control of the city and re-named it New York after the Duke of York. The city served as the capital of the US from 1785-1790.
New York hosts over 50 million tourists from all over the world every year. The city has world famous attractions like The Statue of Liberty, Broadway, Central Park, Wall Street Financial District, Ellis Island, The Empire State Building, Times Square and too many others to list.
New York’s Manhattan has the world’s most valuable real estate due to the fact that it is the world’s financial capital and home to 45 Fortune 500 Companies. The city has the largest GDP of the US and is second in the world.
