About Houston
Houston, located in Southeastern Texas is the largest city in the state with over 2.1 million residents also serves as the governmental center of Harris County. Houston is the economic and cultural center of the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metro area which is the 6th largest area in the US with a population of nearly 6 million as of the 2010 US Census.
Founded in 1836 and incorporated into a city on 1837, the city is named after then President of the Republic of Texas, former General Sam Houston. The nearby port, expansion of the railroad industry and discovery of oil in the area aided the rapid growth of the region in the early 1900′s. Further growth was experienced in the 1950′s with the invention of air conditioning while many from the Rust Belt re-located to the area in the 1970′s.
Houston is home to numerous Fortune 500 Companies, in fact, the city is second only to New York City. The economic landscape is comprised mostly of energy companies, manufacturing, aeronautics, transportation and healthcare. The city is home to the Texas Medical Center, which is the world’s largest concentration of healthcare and research as well as NASA’s Johnson Space Center which functions as the Mission Control Center.
Houston had the 3rd tallest skyline in the United States. Many tunnels and skywalks with shops and restaurants connect the buildings dowtown so the residents can avoid the summer heat. Houston is known as the most air conditioned place in the world.
The city has one of the most diverse populations in the US, in which 1.1 million residents were born outside the country. Most immigrants come from either Mexico or countries in Aisa. Houston also hosts consular offices for 86 different countries.
