About Long Island

Long Island is located in the Southeastern part of New York on the East Coast. The Island stretches 118 miles out into the Atlantic Ocean. Long Island is 23 miles from the North shore to the South shore and is home to a total population of 7,568,304, which is roughly 39% of people living in the state of New York. There are 4 counties on Long Island and they are Kings, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk.

Overall, the island has a population density of 5,402 people per square mile, with more people living on the Western end. Long Island is the most inhabited in the United States and 17th  in the world. If it were a state, Long Island would rank 13th in population behind Virginia. The land area of the island is larger than that of the state of Rhode Island.

The counties of Kings and Queens include Brooklyn and Queens, but since the two boroughs are part of New York City, Long Island gernerally refers to Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Without the Brooklyn and Queens populations, the island is home to 2,832,882 residents.

in 1609, English navigator, Henry Hudson arrived in the area and began settling. Shortly after that time, the Dutch occupied the Western part of the island and the area and it was known as New Amsterdam. in 1640, English Puritans from New Haven, Connecticut settled the Eastern city of Southold. In 1664, the English tool control of the Dutch settlement and re-named it New York. In 1683, the English surveyed the counties of Kings, Queens and Suffolk. The English maintained control of the area through much of the Revolutionary War, only to cede the land to the US once they were defeated.

In 1898, the cities of Brooklyn and Queens were amalgamated into the city of New York. As a result, the Eastern part of Queens County was re-designated as present-day Nassau County.

The Long Island Railroad, which was first commissioned 1834 and reached the Eastern end of the island in 1844, still moves 282,400 commuters a day. The island was only accessible by boat to the rest of the United States until the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883. The commuter rails ended on the Western edge of the island and commuters finished their journey to New York City via ferry.

Long Island is known as the first suburban area of the US. The diverse population doubled every 20 years in the early days of the development of the island. The population of the area skyrocketed after World War II with many veterans returning home and moving to the island into new developments such as Levittown.

Many residents of Long Island commute to the city to work, while others work in manufacturing, agriculture and fishing. Tourism is a big part of the economy on the Eastern end of the island.
