About Seattle

Seattle, located on the Puget Sound in Northwest Washington is the county seat of King County. With 608,660 residents as of the 2010 US Census, Seattle is the largest city in Washington as well as the Northwest United States. The Seattle-Tacoma Metro area has a population of over 3.4 million people, raking it among the top 15 in the United States.

Seattle grew significantly in land and population by annexing nearby smaller cities and was one of the top 25 cities in the US by 1910. Growth was halted by the Great Depression but rebounded after World War II. Many other smaller cities were also admitted into the city which makes Seattle seem like a ‘city of neighborhoods.’ With many areas throughout the city located in close proximity, the city has a relatively high population density of over 7,300 people per square mile and is considered very walkable. Walkscore ranked Seattle the 6th most walkable city in the US in 2011.

While Seattle has a reputation for its precipitation, the city has a fairly mild climate which makes it condusive for outdoor activity. With mountains nearby, many ski in the winter and hike all year round. At any given time of the year you will find locals jogging in the parks and enjoying the outdoors.

Native Americans were thought to inhabit the area for at least 4,000 years prior to the arrival of the first white European explorers in the 1700′s. In 1851, Arthur Denny and the Denny Party as it was known, settled in the area. Denny later named the city Seattle in honor of Chief Seattle of the Duwamish and Squamish Tribes in 1853.

The area was first known as a lodging site and for ship building for miners traveling to and from Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush. In addition to older industries such as fishing and sea transportation, Seattle has emerged as on of the most technologically advanced cities in the world. The area has numerous software, computer and manufacturing facilities that employ the highly educated population. Boeing has its largest manufacturing plant in the area and many computer and software companies have followed Microsoft’s lead and located in the area. Seattle remains the 8th largest port in the United States and today’s Green initiatives are helping shape environmental sustainability.

The Emerald city is also famous for its music and live entertainment. The home town of Ray Charles and Quiny Jones has one of the best live jazz scenes and another native son, Jimi Hendrix influenced a new generation of rock. Seattle also lays claim as the birthplace of the unique grunge sound of the 1990′s from bands like Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam. Much of today’s indie rock scene can also be attributed in part to the city.
