About Los Angeles
Los Angeles, located in Southern California on the Pacific Ocean is the largest city in California and second largest in the United States. According to the 2010 US Census, L.A. had a population of 3,792, 621 making it the 48th largest city in the world. The city has a density of over 8,000 people per square mile which and some of the suburbs have an even higher concentration which makes it one of the most densely populated areas in the US but not quite to the level of New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco or Boston. The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana Metro Area has a total population of 12,828,837 which makes it the 2nd largest in the US. Los Angeles is also the county seat of Los Angeles County which is the most populated county in the US with over 9.8 million residents.
First settled in 1781 by Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve, the city became part of Mexico in 1821 and was then purchased by The United States in 1848 as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The city was incorporated 5 months before California officially became a state in 1850.
The region has gown to become the 3rd richest city in the world and also the “Creative Capital of the World.” The area has more writers, actors, musicians, filmmakers and dancers than anywhere else in the world at any time in civilization.
With the entertainment industry dominating the economy with movies, television shows, music, books, video games and performing arts, the area also has become the third most influential area in the world in both culture and finance. The financial district has more activity than many countries GDP’s. Los Angeles is a world center for international trade, fashion, science and technology and tourism.
The city is the most diverse in the United States and is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. The subtropical-mediterranean climate yields almost perfect weather. There are over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year and only 35 days of measurable precipitation per year. The temperature is usually in the 70’s or 80’s on any given day with a few exceptions here and there.
