About Spokane

Spokane, located in Eastern Washington serves as the county seat of Spokane County. The city, which is settled on the banks of the Spokane River, is 20 miles West of the Idaho border, 110 South of the Canadian border and 270 miles East of Seattle. Spokane is home to 208,916 residents as of the 2010 US Census, making it the 2nd largest city in the state of Washington and 100th nationally. The Spokane metro area which includes the entire county has a population of 471,221 people. The area is expected to be combined by the US Office of Management and Budget with neighboring Kootenai County in Idaho. The new combined metro area will be home to over 600,000 residents.

Back in 1810, the Northwest Company began its first European settlements in the area. The city of Spokane was officially settled in 1871 and incorporated in 1881. At that time in the late 1800’s, the area was found to be rich in silver and gold and mining activity increased significantly.

The area’s economy has traditionally been based on natural resources but has also expanded to include biotech research and other high-tech research and production.

Nicknamed the “Lilac City” for its abundance of the flower growing naturally in the area, the city is also where Father’s Day was invented.

The city has a Mediterranean Continental Climate due to its elevation of 1843 feet about sea level. The Cascade and Rocky Mountains form a protective barrier that deflects a lot of harsh weather patterns. There is virtually no humidity and it rarely rains in Spokane.
