About San Jose
San Jose, located on the South (San Francisco Bay) Bay Area of California is the 3rd largest city in the state. San Jose is now the 10th largest city in the United States with a population of 945,942 as of the 2010 US Census. The city is known as the ‘Capital of Silicon Valley’ and is of course the anchor of the metro area that is home to a total of 1,975,342 and is also part of the entire San Francisco Bay Area metro which has over 7 million residents. The population density of San Jose is relatively high with over 5,200 persons living per square mile.
Originally founded in 1777, the City of San Jose was in fact the first State Capital of the State of California when it was organized as a state in 1850. The city was historically a rural area and was mostly used for farming until the end of World War II when many veterans settled in the Santa Clara Valley after returning home. Much of current downtown San Jose was built in the 1950′s and 60′s and lacks a unique architectural feel.
The economy of the area is now mostly centered around high-technology manufacturing, microporcessors and software companies. Many of the largest and most innovative companies in the world are headquartered or have major operations in the area such as Cisco, IBM, ebay, Hitachi, Xilinx, Adobe Systems, KLA Tancor, Cadence Design, Hewlitt-Packard, Netgear, Google and Apple Computers. These companies and their founders have elevated the city to a world city status and attract talented individuals from all over the world and from nearby higher learning institutions like Stanford, San Jose State and University of California at Berkeley.
San Jose is rated as the second safest city with over 500,000 residents only behind Honolulu, HI. Residents enjoy a Subtropical Mediterranean Climate with over 300 days of sunshine per year and minimal rainfall. Temperatures do not vary from day to night as much as in other parts of California but the area does have many microclimates which is also common in California. Highs in January average 60 degrees while highs in July average 84 degrees.
