About Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh, located in Southwest Pennsylvania is also the county seat of Allegheny County. With a population of 305, 704 as of the 2010 US Census, the city has seen a decrease of residents living within the city limits but an increase of people in the metro area which is now home to 2,356,285. The metro area now ranks as the 22nd most populated in the US. Known as the “Steel City” and the “City of Bridges,” Pittsburgh was settled oin 1717. The area was influential in the French and Indian War. The French inhabited Fort Duquesne which withstood British resistance for some time.
Pittsburgh’s 446 bridges is the most in the world, in fact the city has 3 more than Venice Italy. The city is situated at the confluence of 3 rivers, The Ohio River, The Allegheny River and The Monongahela River. The rivers have always played an important role in the development of the area. Long known as the “Steel City” for being a leader in steel production, the city’s economy has evolved significantly over the past 40 years.
While some steel production and steel-related businesses still operate in the area, most new jobs are created in the service and technology sectors. Health care, education, technology, robotics, engineering and financial services are the focus of today in the area. Pittsburgh is home to quite a few higher learning institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, Carlow University, Chatham University, Point Park University, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and The Pennsylvania Culinary Institute.
The city is home to the first commercially licensed radio station, KDKA-AM which went on the air in 1920. Pittsburgh has also been the setting and/or location of over 123 major motion pictures according to the Pittsburgh Film Office.
