About Cincinnati
Cincinnati is located in southwest Ohio along the banks of the Ohio River with a metro area that reaches across the river into northern Kentucky and southeastern Indiana. Nicknamed the Queen City,Cincinnati was founded in 1788 and incorporated into a city in 1819. Its rich German heritage led to it being a major hub of the pre-prohibition brewing industry. In 1867, the Cincinnati Red Stockings (now the Cincinnati Reds) became the world’s first professional baseball team. The Reds also hosted Major League Baseball’s first night game at Crosley Field in 1935. Cincinnati is also proud of its importance as a major stop on the Underground Railroad.
Today, the metro area is home to approximately 2.2 million people, making it a top 25 market in the United States. Fountain Square is at the heart of the downtown area, famed for its appearance in the opening of the TV show WKRP in Cincinnati. Loyal Cincinnatians are devoted to their two professional franchises: the Reds of Major League Baseball and the long struggling Bengals of the NFL. In recent years, commercial development in the downtown area along the river banks has become a top priority for the city. On the Ohio side of the river, Cincinnati has built two new stadiums for its sports franchises, a museum dedicated to the Underground Railroad, and a brand new retail, dining, and residence area called The Banks. This trend mixes nicely with northern Kentucky’s recent development of the southern bank of the river just across from downtown.
