About Tampa

Tampa is located on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Anchoring the Tampa Bay Area, the city is the county seat of Hillsborough County and is home to 335,709 residents as of the 2010 US Census. The Tampa Bay urban area has a population of 2.7 million making it the second largest in Florida behind Miami but the entire metro area, which extends into Sarasota, is home to over 4 million residents. This area of the state is one of the fastest growing areas in the US with around 97,000 people moving there every year. The Tampa Bay Metro Area is the 4^th largest in the Southeast US behind only Washington, Atlanta and Miami.

Settled in 1823 after being purchased from Spain in 1821, Florida was home to Native Americans, Spanish Colonists and some Americans. Spain had been leveraged into ceding Florida to the United States since they had growing problems in Central and South America with revolutionists. The United States wanted the land as a strategic location to deter enemies of the US from settling there.

The word “Tampa” is thought to mean “sticks of fire” in a Native American language. This name was earned because Tampa sees more lightning strikes than anywhere in the United States. The Humid Subtropical Climate along with the effects of the Gulf of Mexico combine to produce lightning strikes on a regular basis all year long.

Tampa has been rated as a top 5 outdoor city as well as a great place for 20 somethings. The area has been long known as a shipping center and most new jobs are created in the finance, retail, restaurant, tourism, defense, pro sports, service and insurance industries. The area is home to several Fortune 100 companies such as OSI Restaurant Partners, Raymond James Financial and TECO Energy and others.
