About Milwaukee

Milwaukee is located in Eastern Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. The largest city in Wisconsin with 594,833 residents according to the 2010 US Census is also the county seat of Milwaukee County. The city’s population ranks it among the top 40 US cities at number 39. The city’s population peaked in 1960 when more than 740,000 people lived there, but the density of the city remains above average at 6,296 residents per square mile.

Originally settled in 1818 by French Canadians, current day Milwaukee is the consolidation of 3 smaller cities. The 3 cities combined and were incorporated in 1846. In the 1840’s many immigrants from Europe, mostly German, moved to the city. The area still has a considerable German population as well as Polish, Italian and Irish. Milwaukee is home to the largest Italian and Irish Festivals in the world today.

Known for being a mostly brewing and manufacturing city, Milwaukee has managed to add other industries to the job pool over the last few decades.
