About Louisville
Louisville, located in North Central Kentucky on the South banks of the Ohio River, is also the largest city in the state of Kentucky and the county seat of Jefferson County. Home to the Kentucky Derby, Muhammad Ali, Thomas Edison, the Louisville Slugger, Papa John’s Pizza, Taco Bell, President Zachary Taylor, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut, Long John Silvers, A&W Restaurants, The University of Louisville and Humana Health Services, the city has a population of 741,096.
Referred to as the Northernmost Southern City or the Southernmost Midwest city, Louisville has the feel of both regions. The city is on the Northern edge of the Humid Subtropical Climate which generally means hot and humid Summers and cold Winters. Being near the border of the Continental Climate and Subtropical can cause severe weather on occasion. Temperatures can vary greatly from day to day in the Spring and Fall which can cause high winds and unpredictable weather.
Founded in 1778 and named after King Louis XVI of France as a shipping and transportation and shipping hub along the Ohio River, the city has since consolidated with Jefferson County in 2003 to form one large entity. The merger increased the population of the city to over 700,000 but the metro area known as “Kentuckiana” remains home to about 1.2 million residents.
