Dubuque has long been a center of manufacturing and the economy has recently experienced significant growth in other sectors. In the 2000’s, the city led Iowa and the Midwest in job growth, ranking among the top 25 fastest-growing economies in the country. Most recently the area has seen continued growth in the financial, healthcare, educational, tourism, publishing and service industries.
The city is one of the oldest European settlements along the Mississippi River. French settlers were recorded to have begun inhabiting the area as early as 1673. In 1682, the area was claimed by France until 1763, when Spain took control of the area as a result of the Seven Years’ War.
Dubuque is the only large city in Iowa with hills, while most of the state is flat die to glaciations. The city has numerous buildings on the National Register of Historic Places such as the Fourth Street Elevator, which is the shortest and steepest railroad in existence. The proximity to the forests in Minnesota and Wisconsin made it an important timber and boat building region and was one of the largest cities in the US in the 1860’s through 1880’s.
