San Diego, the second largest city in California and is also the county seat of San Diego County. With 1,301,617 residents as of the 2010 US Census, San Diego is the 8th largest city in the country. Located on the Pacific Ocean just North of the Mexican border, San Diego has the most desirable climate in the United States.
Classified as a Mediterranean climate, the yearly average temperature is 70.8 degrees. Like most of California, the area has many Microclimates. The temperature and precipitation levels vary East and South of the city. Just 10 miles inland temperatures can be 20 degrees warmer on any given day. The mild climate has made San Diego one of the most popular vacation destinations in the United States. With numerous beaches and natural resources for residents and tourists to enjoy, San Diego has taken advantage of these attributes and built a solid revenue base. Several cruise lines port in San Diego and pump millions into the economy every month.
The deepwater port has brought about a significant military presence in the area. In fact, San Diego is home to the largest Naval Fleet in the world. In addition, there are several Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard bases along the San Diego Bay. The deep water of the bay has also made it possible for submarine construction and ship building.

Originally settled in 1542 by Spanish explorers, the city has been a part of the United States since 1850. The area has a terrain with a lot of hills and valleys. The San Diego River, which runs through downtown creates a valley that splits the city into a North Side and a South Side. With a relatively low population density the city is built around hills and valleys which seem to segregate areas of the city. Most residents travel by car since everything is quite spread out.
