The Twin Cities area of Minnesota, located in the East Central part of the state is comprised of Minneapolis and St. Paul along with 184 additional cities and townships. St. Paul and Minneapolis border each other and their downtown areas are located approximately 9 miles from one another.
The region is built around the Mississippi, Minnesota and St. Croix Rivers and is home to 3,279,833 residents making the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN, WI metro area rank 16th in the United States as of the 2010 US Census.
The phrase Twin Cities began as Dual Cities in 1872 and despite the Twin moniker, Minneapolis and St. Paul are quite different. Minneapolis is considered more modern and influenced by its Scandinavian founders while St. Paul resembles an East Coast city from its French, German, Irish and English founders.

Minneapolis, the largest city in the state of Minnesota also serves as the county seat of Hennepin County. Known as the City of Lakes, the city is home to over 20 lakes and 382,578 residents according to the 2010 US Census making it the 48th largest city in the United States. The population of the city has held relatively constant since the 1960’s while the metro area has grown significantly. Part of this is due to the fact that the city was not able to annex neighboring land which makes the city one of the more densely populated cities especially an inland city with over 7,000 people per square mile.
Officially incorporated in 1867, the area has a history that dates back to the 1680’s with the first recorded French settlers arriving in what is now Minneapolis. The city’s economic identity began as the flour milling capital of the world. Milling and food production is still an important part of the economy as General Mills maintains their corporate headquarters in the area. In addition to manufacturing and industry, Minneapolis is home to 4 Fortune 500 and large companies such as Target, US Bancorp, Xcel Energy, Ameriprise Financial and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Pepsi Americas. Hospitals and educational institutions like the University of Minnesota also employ a significant amount of local residents.
Minneapolis is now considered a great place for young professionals because of its amenities and culture. The park system is said to be the best in the United States and despite the relatively cold climate, the city is one of the most active outdoor cities in the country.
St. Paul, which is one of the Twin Cities in Minnesota also serves as the state capital. The 2nd most populated city in the state is home to 285,068 according to the 2010 US Census. The City lies mostly on the East Bank of the Mississippi River and is home to the first lock dam built in 1900. St. Paul is also the center of government of Ramsey County, which is the smallest and most densely populated county in the state.
The city’s population grew quickly once it was designated as the state capital in 1849, which pre-dates the city’s incorporation in 1854. The architectural influence resembles that of a city on the East Coast or New England because most of the settlers in the area originated back East. Fort Snelling is said to have attracted many New Englanders in the 1800’s which explains the heavy concentration of English and Irish descendents.
St. Paul is home to some major corporations and despite being the state capital, most workers are employed by private sector jobs. Ecolab and Lawson Software call the city home while the Ford Assembly plant and 3M employ thousands of local residents.
In the winter, the St. Paul Winter Carnival which dates back to 1886 hosts around 350,000 attendees with ice sculptures and other outdoor winter traditions.
