About Columbus

Columbus is the state capital and largest city in Ohio.  Located in Central Ohio, Columbus is home to around 800,000 residents making it the 15th largest city in the United States as of the 2010 Census. The county seat of Franklin County is also the third largest city in the Midwest and 4th largest state capital behind Phoenix, Indianapolis and Austin, TX.

The metropolitan area with 1.8 million residents is the 3rd largest in Ohio behind Cincinnati and Cleveland. The city, founded in 1812 was named after Christopher Columbus and has been the state capital since 1816.

Home to several colleges and universities such as The Ohio State University, Capital University and Franklin University, Columbus’ economy is mostly white collar with most new jobs created in the technical, information technology, research and services sectors. As you would expect in a state capital, government and public employees make up the largest groups as well as insurance, financial services, banking and health care services. With its location within 500 miles of more than 50% of the US population, the area also employs a great deal of logistics and distribution professionals.

The diverse and relatively modern economy has helped Columbus sustain growth even in periods of recession. There are many prominent companies based in Columbus the spread across several industries such as food/restaurants, retail clothing, insurance, banking, financial services, medical, information technology, research, aviation, logistics and manufacturing. With a well-educated workforce, Columbus has emerged as a technologically advanced city.
