About Cleveland

Cleveland is located on the banks of Lake Erie and is the largest city on Lake Erie. The population has shrunk over the last several decades due to the fact that many have moved to nearby suburbs. At one time Cleveland was one of the largest cities in the country with around 915,000 residents. The population has since decreased to around half of that today.

Founded in 1796 at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, the city was named in honor of General Moses Cleaveland. Ohio’s second largest city also serves as the county seat of Cuyahoga County, which is still the most populated county in the state. Downtown Cleveland does remain the center of of the metropolitan area, which is home to approximately 2,500,000 people.

Early in Cleveland’s history it was popular among immigrants from Europe and still boasts several ethnic enclaves. Manufacturing of steel, refinement of oil, transportation and construction dominated the economy in the past, while the service sector is most prevalent today. Cleveland is still home to all of the major sporting events in the area such as the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers and the Cleveland Browns. The Cleveland metro area is still the largest market in Ohio and 23rd in the United States.
