About Toledo
Toledo, located in Northwest Ohio on the West Basin of Lake Erie is well known as the “Glass City.” The 4th largest city in Ohio also situated on the Maumee River is home to just under 300,000 residents. The Toledo metro area which extends north into Michigan has a population just over 650,000.
Originally founded in 1833 as part of the Michigan Territory, Toledo was awarded to the state of Ohio from Michigan and re-organized just 2 years later. The Toledo War was a small ordeal with no bloodshed between the two parties and is jokingly referred to as what started the Ohio State-Michigan football rivalry.
Toledo’s location, off Interstates 75 and 80 and about 45 miles South of Detroit has made it an important industrial and distribution city. Toledo earned its “Glass City” nickname from the manufacturing of bottles, windows and windshields. The city has played and continues to play an important part in auto manufacturing. Many automotive supply companies operate in the city and numerous Fortune 500 manufacturing companies such as Champion Spark Plugs call Toledo home. Not only is Toledo historically a supplier of automotive manufacturing, but it has also been the home of Wills-Jeep until 1953. In fact, a Jeep assembly plant is still in operation in Toledo.
Residents and those visiting the area have plenty of recreational options such as the Toledo Zoo, parks along the Maumee River, Toledo Mudhens baseball games, The Toledo Museum of Art, Baseball, Basketball and football games at the University of Toledo and nearby Bowling Green State University and concerts at the Perostyle which is located in the Greek revival part of the city.
Toledo is also the setting of the TV show “Melissa & Joey” (ABC Family) where she plays a role as a member of the Toledo City Council and the hometown of Jamie Farr who played Corporal Klinger on M.A.S.H.
