About Metro Detroit

Founded in 1701 by French-Canadians and located on the banks of the Detroit River, Michigan’s largest city also serves as the county seat of Wayne County. With a population of 713,777 as of the 2010 Census, the city of Detroit has lost over a million residents over the past 50 years as it once was home to 1,849,568.

A significant number of those who moved out of the city have remained in the Southeast Michigan area now sometimes referred to as Metro Detroit. This area which consists mostly of suburbs is now home to approximately 4,296,250 residents , making it the 11th largest metro area in the United States.

Metro Detroit has been linked to automobiles since the beginning and is still currently home to General Motors, Chrysler Corporation and Ford Motor Company. Many engineering firms and auto suppliers still conduct business in the area. The Motor City also gave way to a style of music popular in the 1960’s and 1970’s and beyond known as Motown. The automotive manufacturing jobs in the area attracted many from the Southern United States which has influenced the Motown and jazz sound that is uniquely Detroit.

Downtown Detroit’s performing arts scene is said to be the 2nd largest in the US. With many venues such as The Fox Theatre, Music Hall, Masonic Temple Theatre, Detroit Opera House, Fisher Theatre, The Fillmore Detroit, St. Andrews Hall, Majestic Theatre and more, residents and visitors are sure to find live entertainment that pleases.

The host city of Superbowl XL has been seeing a revival of young professionals moving into downtown and areas like Midtown and New Center. This recent shift in population has helped with the development of new high-rise condominiums, retail and casinos. Detroit Metro is now home to three casinos, MGM Grand, Greektown and Motor City.

The area has been home to several movies, in fact, legislators have passed tax incentives for producers to film movies in the area. The area has also been the setting for many drama and sitcom tv shows.
