About Indianapolis

Indianapolis, the largest city in the state also serves as the county seat of Marion County and capital of Indiana. As of the 2010 Census, the city had a population of 839,489 making it the 12th largest city in the US and 2nd in the Midwest behind Chicago and is also the 2nd largest state capital only behind Phoenix, AZ.

The Indianapolis Metro area is one of the fastest growing regions in the US due in large part by its affordable cost of living and stable economy. The metro area which extends into Johnson, Hendricks and Hamilton County is home to 1,756,241 which makes it the 34th most populated area in the US.

Founded in 1821 on the banks of the White River in Central Indiana, the city’s name is derived from 2 words, “Indiana” and “polis,” a Greek term for “City.” The local economy is rather diverse and modern. As you would expect in a state capitol, government jobs are a significant source of employment along with transportation, health care services, aviation, education, financial and retail. The area is home to some of the largest distribution centers in the US which can be attributed to its location in the central US. FedEx has a major hub in the area as does Amazon.com.

Tourism and entertainment also remain important industries for Indianapolis. Famous for the Indianapolis 500 and Brickyard 400, the area hosts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually who attend these major races. The NHRA also hold events in the area as well. Professional sports are also a major draw with the Indiana Pacers (NBA) and the Indianapolis Colts (NFL) which play in Lucas Oil Stadium – the home of Superbowl XLVI.
