About Denver

Denver, the capital of Colorado is located in the North Central part of the state on the Western edge of the Highland Plains, just East of the Rocky Mountains. Known as the Mile High City for the fact that it is literally located at 5,280 feet above sea level, Denver was founded in 1858 during Pike’s Peak Gold Rush as a mining town by prospectors from Lawrence, Kansas. The area that is now modern-day Denver was once part of the Kansas Territory before the formation of the Territory turned state of Colorado.

Denver, with a population of 600,000 has evolved drastically since its mining town days to become one of America’s most desirable places to live. Residents of the metro area have plenty of recreational activities to choose from such as museums, performing arts, sports, outdoor activities like hiking and nearby skiing.

With a large concentration of Mexican-Americans, Denver’s food scene is heavily influenced by Southwestern customs. The Southwest influence can be found in Denver Omelets, Various Red Chile Sauces, Colorado Burritos, Chiles Rellenos and Tamales. The Denver Sandwich is a popular staple, which features a Denver Omelets between two pieces of toasted bread. Also popular in the area is Rainbow Trout and Rocky Mountain Oysters.

With a metro population of around 2.5 million active residents, Denver has been named the 6th most walkable city by WalkScore due in large part to the abundance of parks. The contemporary lifestyle of Denver is spread all throughout the metro area. Commuters can leave the car at home and travel to various parts of the city by light-rail trains courtesy of Denver RTD as well as hundreds of busses.
